Dynamic NFTs: artwork that evolves on XRPL Home

Artists can now update an NFT's artwork, name, description, traits and links after minting — even after it sells — while the NFT keeps its original identity, ownership and history on the XRP Ledger.

What if an NFT didn't have to stay the same forever?

What if an artist could reveal something new, change the artwork with the seasons, celebrate a collector's milestone, or let a creation evolve long after it was minted?

That's now possible through Dynamic NFTs on XRPL Home.

Artists can create NFTs whose artwork, names, descriptions, traits and external links can be updated later — even after the NFT has been sold. The NFT itself doesn't need to be burned or replaced. It keeps its original identity, ownership and transaction history.

The artwork can evolve. The NFT remains the same.

What makes a Dynamic NFT different?

Traditional NFTs are generally created with metadata intended to remain fixed. Dynamic NFTs introduce a different possibility.

When an artist mints a Dynamic NFT through XRPL Home, the NFT is created with an XRP Ledger setting that permits future updates. The issuing wallet can then authorise changes through a new signed transaction.

This means the artist can update the content associated with the NFT while preserving its original identity on the XRP Ledger. And because the update is signed and recorded on the ledger, it isn't simply an invisible change made inside XRPL Home.

One NFT, many creative possibilities

Imagine collecting a piece of artwork that continues to tell a story. An egg hatches. A character grows older. A painting changes with the seasons. A mystery piece reveals its final form. A community achievement becomes part of the artwork itself.

Dynamic NFTs let artists explore those ideas without requiring collectors to buy a completely new NFT each time the artwork changes.

  • Living artwork — a creation develops through multiple stages.
  • Mystery reveals — hidden artwork is unveiled at a later date.
  • Seasonal editions — the same NFT receives new artwork for holidays or special events.
  • Achievements — new traits commemorate milestones or accomplishments.
  • Artist collaborations — a piece evolves through new creative contributions coordinated by its issuer.
  • Corrections — artists can fix descriptions, artwork or trait information without burning and reminting.
⚠️ What isn't built yet

These are creative possibilities. Scheduled updates, automatic achievement updates and collaborative authorisation workflows are not yet part of the current XRPL Home Dynamic NFT tool.

Creating a Dynamic NFT

  1. Connect your wallet

Then open XRPL Home Dynamic NFTs.

  2. Select a collection and configure the royalty

The same collection and royalty concepts as a standard mint — see royalties and pricing.

  3. Upload the artwork
  4. Add the NFT name, description and traits
  5. Select Mint Dynamic NFT

    Approve the transaction in Xaman.

The NFT is minted into the artist's wallet and can then be listed or transferred through the usual NFT process. XRPL Home handles the artwork and metadata storage through the existing minting experience.

Updating artwork after minting

The artist who issued the NFT can return to the Dynamic NFTs page and select Manage & update.

From there, the artist can choose a collection, select an eligible NFT or enter its NFT ID, and open the existing metadata. They can replace the artwork, edit the name or description, change traits, or update the external link. Anything they leave unchanged stays as it is.

When they're ready, they select Update NFT and authorise the transaction in Xaman. The NFT can be updated again in the future, including after it has been sold.

What can change?

NFT propertyCan the issuer update it?
ArtworkYes
Name and descriptionYes
TraitsYes
External linkYes
NFT IDNo
Current ownerNo, not through a metadata update
Collection and royaltyNo
Dynamic / updateable settingNo — established at mint
🔑 The issuing wallet controls updates

Buying a Dynamic NFT does not give the collector permission to change its metadata. The collector owns the NFT, while the issuing artist retains the authority to update its content. XRPL Home provides the interface for the issuer to authorise those updates.

What collectors should know

Dynamic NFTs introduce an exciting new kind of relationship between artists and collectors. But they also introduce something important: trust.

When you collect a Dynamic NFT, you're collecting artwork that may change in the future. An artist might use that ability to create something extraordinary — revealing new chapters of a story, celebrating community achievements, or continually improving a piece.

Collectors should understand the artist's intentions before purchasing. Ask what might change, why it might change, and whether the artist has shared an evolution plan.

Your NFT ID, ownership and sales history remain intact through metadata updates. Earlier artwork versions are not deleted from storage when new versions are published, although XRPL Home does not yet provide a dedicated version-history display on NFT pages.

The same habits that apply to any purchase apply here — how to collect NFTs safely covers verifying the issuer before you buy.

What comes next?

Today's Dynamic NFT experience is an important starting point. There are still features to build, including automatic updates, scheduled transformations, public collector-mint drops, and clearer indicators showing which NFTs are dynamic.

Imagine opening an NFT page and being able to explore every previous version of the artwork. Or an artist creating a collection where each piece grows alongside the community. Or a game character that earns new visual traits as its story develops.

Those are directions worth exploring as XRPL Home continues to grow. For now, the foundation is here.

Art doesn't always have to be the finished product. Sometimes, it's just the beginning.

Key takeaways

  • A Dynamic NFT is minted with an XRP Ledger setting that permits later updates to its metadata.
  • Artwork, name, description, traits and external link can change; the NFT ID, owner, collection and royalty cannot.
  • The issuing wallet authorises every update with a signed transaction recorded on the ledger.
  • Buying a Dynamic NFT does not give the collector the ability to change it — that stays with the issuer.
  • Collectors should ask what might change and why before buying.
